Monthly Recap: July & August 2011

I though it might be fun (and useful) to have a monthly recap of the most popular posts on the blog recurring at the end of each month.

For this month I will obviously be playing catch up, and have decided to include both August & July in this post.

I will rank the posts by the most number of shares, which will be labeled in [brackets], displaying how many “shares” (Facebook Likes, Twitter Tweets, and Google +1’s) each post got up until this point.

Since I’ll try to do one of these every month, remember to share your favorite posts on the blog, as it will factor in to the post’s ranking on this list!

Sound good? Let’s do this thing then, here’s the top posts for July & August of 2011.

Dubstep: “Mini Mix” by PANTyRAID

This mix actually came out a while ago, possibly late 2010? Either way, it’s definitely a killer mixtape and needs to see the light of day, big thanks to PANTyRAID for giving it away for free. A mix of hip-hop remixes and dubstep, definitely a party track, which is a majority of what  PANTyRAID produces, consider it the less serious side of The Glitch Mob’s member Ooah, who has teamed up with MartyParty.

Electronic: “Music For The Royal Pyrotechnics” by R/D

As you can probably tell by some of my other posts on R/D, notably the Forward Slash Mixtape, and the Wilhelm Scream Remix, I’m a huge fan. This is another mellow track, a great follow up to our previous Minnesota post (which R/D introduced me to by sharing his playlist on Twitter).

This is actually a remix of ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’ by the famous classical composer ‘Handel’. Serene, tranquil, and an overall great composition, shows the diversity capable in electronic genre, ie, it doesn’t all have to “womp” to be good.

Electronic: “Ancient Machines” (Album) by Minnesota

Ancient Machines

Loving the first track of this EP, “Breathe”, and the rest is definitely solid as well. Released exclusively on Additech, so no download for this one unfortunately, but you do get to listen to all of the track in full 320, so enjoy them here. Looking forward to more from Minnesota, first experience was with the “Rolling In The Deep” dubstep remix with MartyParty, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Hip-Hop: “Tiger Trail” by The Last Emperor

Tiger Shark

I always loved the production on this album, really an original piece of underground hip-hop for those interested, this is one of my favorite tracks called “Tiger Trail”, it combines the solid production of the album with the talents of The Last Emperor. Another example of solid production with good storytelling and originality.

Glitch: “Crazniac” by Sugarpill

Graffiti Texture

I have posted about Sugarpill before, and the track was well recieved, and he’s definitely gone off and done something different with this one. Unfortunately, we have not been blessed with a free download with this one, but enjoy the full track nontheless, and grab it from Additech if you need to take it with you. Looking forward to some more experimental, glitch “freestyle” music as it were, it’s not as catchy but it’s quite original.

Electronic: “64 Bytes (Boreta Remix) by EPROM

Combining the totally off the wall sound of EPROM with the prowess of veteran glitch artist Boreta was bound to lead to something memorable, and it shows in this remix of “64 Bytes”, which turned out to be a catchy and fun sound that was easily the most ambitious of the “64 Bytes” remixes off of the EP.

Electronic: “Color Storm ReMixtape” by Bassnectar

Melting Landscape Abstract Painting

New mixtape by Bassnectar, I’ll be honest (as usual, ha) and say I didn’t really like the beginning, but as the mix progressed I started enjoying it more and more, and as such it is now making an appearance on the blog, with a direct DL (instead of having to enter your email) link, enjoy!

Is the “Free Music” Model a Good Business Model, or Done Out of Necessity?

RE:FORM SCHOOL

As I’ve mentioned before on the site, I wanted to write some longer articles from time to time where we can discuss some of the other aspects of electronic music, outside of the music itself.

Previously I’ve discussed whether or not a mainstream audience will ever accept music without lyrics and how this might play a role in the future of electronic music.

Today I want to talk about the “free music” business model that is practiced by many electronic artists, and I want YOUR opinion on whether or not you think this is a good business model for artists to follow, or whether it is done out of necessity.
